Pakistan won by 4 wickets with 1 ball remaining (D/L method) against Sri Lanka in the 1st ODI Cricket match Played at Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium, Sooriyawewa, Hambantota on Augus 23, 2014. Below watch the Video Highlights of the match.
Sohaib Maqsood hit a brilliant 73-ball 89 as Pakistan pulled off a sensational win over Sri Lanka to go 1-0 up in the 3-match ODI series.
A confidence booster for Misbah and his men. They didn't look anywhere near victory when Misbah became the fifth casualty with the score on 106. Sri Lanka then suddenly lost the plot. There were misfields galore, Sangakkara missed a simple stumping chance and a couple of run-out chances were fluffed. Take nothing away from Sohaib Maqsood and Fawad Alam. They put their heads down, constructed a record 6th wicket partnership and also found the boundaries along. Alam fell on the stroke of victory, but Maqsood held his nerve and steered the visitors home.
The bowling was excellent to begin with but faded away as the partnership between Maqsood and Alam grew. Mathews ended with two wickets and so did Thisara Perera. But under pressure, things fell apart. They will now have to win the remaining two matches, else they will have to settle for another home series defeat, something that doesn't augur well with the 2015 World Cup coming up.
