South Africa beat India in the 2nd Test and Won the Series by 1-0

South Africa stormed to a 10-wicket victory to bid Jacques Kallis goodbye in style as they wrapped up a 1-0 series victory over India in Durban.

This is India's first Test loss in 2013. That can be extended to Test series as well. This is their first loss all year. South Africa won the big moments. Dale Steyn produced a terrific spell after a dismal first Test to trigger an Indian collapse. The batting was clinical and they managed a healthy lead. Kallis scored a ton in his final Test. The fast bowlers were fiery at the end of the day yesterday and continued in the same vein today morning

There were a couple of iffy decisions in the morning, particularly that of Virat Kohli but it is a part of the game. South Africa will point to Kallis' similar departure in the 1st Test when he was batting well but those apart, the umpiring was top class all through. South Africa end the year as the No. 1 in Tests and deserve all the accolades that they will get

For India, there were a few positives. It was a young Indian team touring South Africa. The batting department lacked experience but pulled through quite admirably. Barring their show in the 2nd innings of this Test, the young turks have largely looked solid and showed signs that they belonged at this level. The bowling was full of heart in the first Test but the effects of a long bout showed in the second. Mohammad Shami impressed in patches and so did Ravindra Jadeja, with his willingness to bowl long spells.

2nd Test: India 181/1 at Day 1 Bad Light Stops Play

India tour of South Africa 2013: India have won the toss and elected to bat against South Africa in the 2nd Test match Played at Durban (Dec 26-30, 2013) Murali Vijay(91) and Cheteswar Pujara(58) were batting brilliantly for India before bad light stopped play and forced stumps to be called early on Day 1. IND: 181/1.

Steyn and Philander were lacklustre in their first spells. The openers saw through the period without any trouble. Morne Morkel breathed some life into the attack and he was constantly asking questions of either batsmen until he finally snaffled Dhawan. Pujara and Vijay have applied themselves quite well after that wicket. There is nothing alarming in the pitch and South Africa could be in for a long day if the wicket continues to play as it has.

It's been an excellent start to the Boxing day Test for India. Right from the toss, pretty much everything went right for Dhoni's men. They got first use of a flat wicket. The openers saw off the threat of the new ball and thereafter Vijay and Pujara hardly put a foot wrong. For South Africa, the only respite came in the form of bad light in the last session. That has eaten into some valuable time in the game.

Big Bash League 2013-14 Match 1: Melbourne Stars vs Melbourne Renegades Preview

Just as it did last season, the Big Melbourne Derby kicks off the third edition of the KFC T20 Big Bash League, with the Stars and Renegades facing off at the mighty Melbourne Cricket Ground tonight.

In last summer’s opener, all eyes were supposed to be on the long list of quality names on the Stars team sheet, but Renegades’ captain, Aaron Finch, ignored all that to start the tournament in spectacular fashion and clubbed a 65-ball unbeaten 111 to steer the Renegades to an eight wicket victory.

This year, the Stars still boast an impressive list of names, even if the great Shane Keith Warne has finally retired his flipper. No less than twelve of the 18 players in the Stars squad have some degree of International experience.

As always, that will matter little to the Renegades, who will once again be relishing the opportunity to rain on their big brother’s parade. Of course, they might consider themselves to the big brother in the Big Melbourne Derby, and bragging rights are certainly on the line again tonight.

Key Battle: Clint McKay v Aaron Finch

Finch is one of the undisputed master blasters of the BBL, and indeed T20 cricket around the globe, and how he takes on one of the craftier limited overs bowlers in the world, Clint McKay, will go a long way to deciding this first match of BBL|03.

Finch’s 111* in last year’s opener was the second-highest score of BBL|02, yet interestingly, he averaged only one six per innings for the tournament. He’s arguably an even more destructive batsman now, and now holds the highest T20 International score, an astonishing 156 off just 63 balls for Australia against England, in Southampton. His ability to manufacture shots and turn good balls into maximum runs makes him the danger man for the Stars’ attack.

McKay might just be the bowler to bring his Victorian team-mate undone, though, with his clever use of cutters, and his subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) changes of length and pace.

Dark Horse: Ben Rohrer

One of the more underrated batsmen in T20 cricket, Rohrer has an uncanny knack of being able to flourish in tight situations, crafting invaluable contributions from his own bat and guiding teams to unlikely totals in the process. Equally deft at squeezing ones and twos as he is tonking sixes out of nowhere, Rohrer’s impressive BBL|02 form earned him an Australian T20 debut last summer against the West Indies in Brisbane.

Last Time

January 6, 2013 at the MCG: the last outing between these two sides will be remembered most for the fiery mid-pitch confrontation between Stars’ then-captain Shane Warne, and Renegades import, West Indian all-rounder Marlon Samuels. Both players were guilty of needling the other, provocatively or otherwise, and it came to a flashpoint when the two stood toe-to-toe hurling obscenities at each other. With Warne miked-up for the match, it was abundantly clear the two weren’t exchanging Twitter handles.

The match itself was played before an Australian domestic cricket record crowd of 46,581 people on a Sunday night at the MCG, and saw another Aaron Finch-led demolition, with his unbeaten 67 leading the Renegades to 1/147 and a nine-wicket win. Renegades all-rounder, Will Sheridan, took 3/36 to restrict the Stars to 9/146 batting first.

Teams

Stars: Cameron White (C), Jackson Bird, Peter Handscomb, John Hastings, Brad Hodge, David Hussey, Alex Keath, Glenn Maxwell, Clint McKay, Clive Rose, Marcus Stoinis, Matthew Wade, Luke Wright

Renegades: Aaron Finch (C), Fawad Ahmed, Jos Buttler, Tom Cooper, Alex Doolan, Jake Haberfield, Jayde Herrick, Muthiah Muralidaran, Peter Nevill, Aaron O'Brien, Nathan Rimmington, Ben Rohrer, Will Sheridan

Facts and Figures

Stars’ veteran Brad Hodge (342 runs, strike rate 144.91) was third on the BBL|02 runs tally, while Renegades’ batsmen Aaron Finch (332 runs, SR 125.75) and Ben Rohrer (295 runs, SR 152.06) completed the top five.

The Renegades boasted two of the top ten highest BBL|02 scores, with Finch’s 111* against the Stars, and English long-bomber Alex Hales’ (now with Adelaide) 89 against the Sydney Sixers. The Stars’ Hodge (88 v Adelaide), Cameron White (88 v Perth), and Glenn Maxwell (82 v Sixers) also made the top ten.

Stars’ Sri Lankan slinger Lasith Malinga - who should be available for Round 2 - took the BBL record figures of 6/7 from four overs against Perth last year, but incredibly, they aren’t the best figures recorded in T20 cricket. Somerset’s Arul Suppiah took 6/5 in the English T20 comp in 2011, while Shakib Al Hasan took 6/6 in a Caribbean Premier League game in August this year.

While Malinga’s 13 wickets also feature highly, the Renegades own Sri Lankan superstar, the one and only Muthiah Muralidaran, rounded out the top five wicket-takers in BBL|02 with 11, at the superb economy rate of 5.96 runs per over bowled.

Broadcast: from 7:30pm AEDT on Channel 10, and on Fairfax Radio Network.

3rd Test: 200 Runs Partnership Helps West Indies to Reach 289/6 in Day 1 Against New Zealand

New Zealand won the toss and elected to field against West Indies in the 3rd Test Cricket Match Played at Hamilton. West Indies has scored 289 for 6 (Ramdin 107, Chanderpaul 94*, Anderson 3-25) at the end of Day 1. Click here for the Full Scorecard Update. WI were reeling at 86/5 before Ramdin (107) and Chanderpaul (94*) put on a 200-run stand to help the visitors to 289/6 at stumps.

After being sent in by McCullum, the openers got them off to a steady start. Both batsmen were cautious in their approach as they saw off the first hour without any hiccups. However, Powell was tired of blocking as he went after a short delivery and nicked it to Watling. Other than that the batsmen have looked solid and Brathwaite looks good at one end. The new ball bowlers didn't get any assistance from the pitch. Wagner used his variations well to be the pick of the bowlers. With the pitching looking flat it is going to be hard toil for the Kiwis if they don't get wickets

New Zealand bowled well and picked up four wickets in the Second Session. As much as it was good bowling, it was much poorer batting from West Indies. All of their batsmen threw their wickets away. Brathwaite after getting a start fended away from the body and gave catching practise to gully. After that it was another procession as Edwards, Samuels and Deonarine fell in quick succession. Southee was the pick of the bowlers, as he started it all by gettin Brathwaite early in the session. He was well supported by Anderson who also picked up two wickets.

A 200 run partnership between Ramdin and Chanderpaul makes at an even day of Test cricket. After reeling at 86 for 4 in the post lunch session, West Indies were given the stability by some good sensible batting. Ramdin was excellent in his batting display, as he mixed caution with aggression to get to his 4th Test hundred, it had been a while since he got his last one. He had an able partner in Chanderpaul at the other end, who went about business as usual and remained unbeaten at the the end of the day.

The New Zealand bowlers tried hard but were not supported well in the field as they dropped three catches and did some sloppy groundwork. However, with figures of 3 for 25, Anderson was the pick of the bowlers and was well supported by Southee. The hero from the last match, Trent Boult had a forgettable day in the office as he didn't get his line and length right throughout the day. Sodhi was also expensive, but truth be told, that they dropped two chances of his bowling.

1st Test Day 2: India 280; SA 213/6 - Ishant Takes 3 Wickets

South Africa have come back very strongly this morning to take the last 5 wickets for 15 runs in 25 balls. The pressure was built by disciplined bowling from both Steyn and Philander early on and once Morkel broke through, big Vern mopped up the tail. So India who were hoping for something around 350 have fallen for 280. It is an ok score in the first innings on the Wanderers wicket, but at least it gives the bowlers a chance.

South Africa had a dream start to the day as they bowled India out for 280 after they resumed the day at 255/5. Their openers then escaped unscathed to Lunch before Ishant removed Petersen in the post-lunch session. The Amla-Smith partnership added close to 100 runs and it looked like South Africa were heading towards a big first innings lead but Ishant came back into the attack once again and stunned the hosts with a fantastic spell. In the process, he was a on a hat-trick with the wickets of Amla and Kallis. Zaheer then trapped Smith for the 14th time in internationals before Shami Ahmed found the outside edge of JP Duminy. A lot of hope was pinned on AB de Villiers but he too didn't last long falling LBW to Shami.

India came back strongly in the final session to take 5 wickets, but South Africa too fought back with an unbeaten 67-run stand as both teams shared honours after a fascinating day of cricket.

Zaheer Khan and Shami Ahmed bowled well before Vernon Philander brought the hosts back with a gritty knock. He's on the verge of scoring his third Test match fifty and alongside Faf du Plessis, is looking very good to cut down on the deficit. A bit more luck and India could have had a few more wickets but they will have to blame themselves on a few occasions. The latest one being the dropped catch of du Plessis by Rohit Sharma at second slip in the closing stages of the day. With this 67-run ominous looking 7th wicket stand, South Africa could even gain a lead.

1st ODI: Hafeez Ton - Pakistan beat Sri Lanka by 11 Runs

Pakistan won by 11 runs against Sri Lanka in the 1st ODI Cricket Match, Which Played at Sharjah Cricket Stadium, Sharjah on 18th December 2013. Pakistan held onto their nerves and avoided a stiff challenge from the Lankan lower order to beat the visitors by 11 runs.

Pakistan have won the Toss and Chose to bat
Pakistan 322 for 5 (Hafeez 122, Maqsood 73, Sharjeel 61)
Sri Lanka 311 (Kusal 64, Junaid 3-44)
Click here for the Full Scorecard Update

Opting to bat first, Pakistan rode on Mohammad Hafeez's hundred to post a very good total on a good batting surface. A good effort in the end by Pakistan as they end up on 322, which looks like a gettable total on this batting paradise. Opting to bat they got off to a poor start losing Shehzad, but debutant Sharjeel and Hafeez stitched an important stand of 83 for the 2nd wicket and revived them. After taking a lot of criticism for his place in the side, Hafeez proved his detractors wrong by nothching up his 7th ODI ton. Maqsood also supported him well with a well made fifty and Afridi provided some late fireworks to help them cross the 300-run mark.

Sri Lanka started off well with Kusal Perera getting to a fifty but wickets at regular intervals saw them being reduced to 141/4. Useful contributions from Dinesh Chandimal and Angelo Mathews kept the chase alive but Pakistan again found ways to claw back. In the end they managed to handle pressure and pull off a thrilling win despite a great effort from the tailenders. Junaid Khan was expensive but bagged three wickets while Shahid Afridi picked up two.

So, Pakistan go 1-0 up in this 5-match ODI series with a thrilling win. One thought they had the game in their bag when Thisara Perera was dismissed in the 42nd over with Sri Lanka needing over 100 runs, but a stunning 87-run partnership between Senanayake and Prasanna spiced up things. It looked like the duo were going to pull off an unlikely win with a record 8th wicket stand for Sri Lanka against Pakistan but they couldn't quite hold their nerves in the end.

1st Test: Kohli Ton Helps India to Reach 255/5 at Day 1 in Johannesburg

India have won the toss and Chose to bat against South Africa in the 1st Test Cricket Match Played at Johannesburg. Virat Kohli slammed a sublime century to help India end Day 1 at a respectable 255/5. South Africa were boosted by some brilliant pace bowling but India's dogged middle-order held firm. Click here for the Full Scorecard update

Dhawan's dismissal was perfectly set up by Steyn. He repeatedly kept bowling short and increased the pace with each delivery. Kept two men for the chance and got the wicket. The Wanderers wicket is bouncy and Dhawan never looked like he was going to get on top of the bounce and handle Steyn.

India have done reasonably well to reach 70/2 at lunch. The South African attack was all fire and menace as everyone came at the batsmen, but this stand between Kohli and Pujara has pushed India on after the two early setbacks. Dhawan was set up in one Steyn over and eventually dismissed, while his partner Vijay, who was looking assured till Morkel came on, struggled against the giant and fell to him.

India have scored 94 in the second session but lost Pujara and Rohit. Both wickets were cheap ones to give away - one via a terrible call from Kohli while the other was a poor stroke, wafting at a full one which was swinging away.

So one should say that it has been India's day. 255/5 is a score they would've taken with both hands and feet if someone had offered them that score before the start of play today. Dhoni must be lauded for taking the brave step of opting to bat first after winning the toss, when he so easily could've gone for the easier option. The openers didn't last long but it was the Virat Kohli show thereafter which has placed India in this position.

Kohli was just brilliant today - showing impeccable judgment of when to play and when to leave. His defence was solid and he had lots of time to play the ball. Trusted his instincts, played each ball on it's merit and put the bad ones away. The only blot in his innings today was the way he ran Pujara out, but that didn't affect his concentration as he got to a richly deserved ton. After Kohli today, Rahane has caught the eye with his batting. Even Pujara deserves a mention, who showed great character and showcased his defensive technique until he was unfortunately run out by Kohli.

South Africa were very disciplined, they stuck to a line and length and never gave anything loose - except for the backup bowlers who were taken to the cleaners by the Indians. Tahir was very disappointing today and he often allowed the pressure built up to be released with one loose ball per over. Steyn and Morkel were menacing, while Philander had a quiet day. Not their greatest day with the ball it must be said.

Sri Lanka won by 24 runs against Pakistan in the 2nd T20 Cricket Match Played at Dubai on December 13, 2013. Kusal Perera (84) and Sachitra Senanayake (3/27) helped Sri Lanka win the 2nd T20I by 24 runs and retain their No. 1 ranking.

Sri Lanka 211 for 3 (Perera 84, Dilshan 48, Sangakkara 44*)
Pakistan 187 (Sharjeel 50, Senanayake 3-27)
Click here for the Full Scorecard Update
Kusal Perera is the Man of the Match for his superb innings of 84.
Shahid Afridi is the Man of the Series for his all-round effort.

Superb effort from Sri Lanka. Dilshan got them off to a fiery start, Prasanna chipped in with a few lusty blows before Sangakkara put the icing on the cake. In between Perera batted for the entire period to make 84.

An excellent comeback from Sri Lanka has helped them to retain their No.1 ranking in T20Is. After being put in by Hafeez, they went off to a cracking start and the partnership between Perera and Sanga changed the course of the game and they ended up posting a mammoth total. Chasing a huge score, Pakistan got off to a poor start losing Shehzad early and rest of the batsmen failed to stitch an useful stand and at one stage they were precariously placed at 121/8, but a fighting stand of 63 for the 9th wicket between Tanvir and Ajmal brought some hope for the home team, but Sri Lanka fought back to snare the remaining 2 wickets.

Only T20: Pakistan beat Afghanistan in the Last Over

Pakistan won by 6 wickets with 1 ball remaining against Afghanistan in the Only T20 Cricket Match Played at Sharjah on December 8, 2013. Afghanistan took the game to the last ball but an unbeaten 42 by Mohammad Hafeez helped Pakistan get to the target of 138.

A better finish in the end by Afghanistan. They started off badly losing wickets at regular intervals, but useful cameos from Najibullah Zadran and Mirwais helped them reach a decent total.

Pakistan somehow manage to win this one by 6 wickets. They were made to work hard towards the end as Afghan bowlers stifled the run flow and even the experieced Pakistani batsmen couldn't put away the bad balls. Hafeez fighted it out with a gritty 42 to make sure Pakistan don't lose the way after the openers had laid a solid foundation. Afghan bowlers bowled well in patches, but were not able to handle the pressure in tense situations. Pakistan should sort their batting out ahead of the series against Sri Lanka, which will start in 3 days. Afghanistan were playing against a strong side and they should be proud about their performance.

Hafeezis the Man of the Match for his gritty innings of 42.

2nd ODI: South Africa beat India by 134 Runs

South Africa won by 134 runs against India in the 2nd ODI Cricket Match Played at Durban on December 8, 2013. A professional all-round performance from South Africa helped the hosts gain an unassailable 2-0 lead.

An excellent bowling performance hands South Africa a series victory. India got off to a horrendous start as they lost Dhawan and Kohli for a duck. Rohit and Rahane didn't last long either as they went playing some poor shots. Dhoni and Raina hung around and added 40 runs for the fifth wicket before the latter was sent packing by Philander. It was just a matter of time till the end was near. Jadeja and Ashwin prolonged the inevitable for a while before succumbing to the pace and bounce of the Proteas bowlers. The South African bowling was at its best as all the bowlers were among the wickets but Tsotsobe and Steyn were at their lethal best as they shared 7 wickets between them.

The Indian bowlers actually managed to pull things back in this game, when compared to the previous one but the last over from Umesh Yadav undid a lot of good work done until then. Before that South Africa had slipped up considerably after the departure of de Kock. The South African openers laid a superb platform yet again but this time the middle order could not capitalise fully. In the previous game, 100 runs were scored in the last 6 overs whereas today India gave away 'only' 70 in the last 10.

This is India's first series loss this year (series starting in 2013). They had won 6 series before losing this one. There was no bounce and pace on this wicket as compared to the Wanderers but the batsmen played some poor shots and did not show any application at the crease. The only positive for India in this match is the way they bowled at the death except the last over.
